To celebrate our team's hard work, Tencent Boston studio management threw a surprise picnic for the entire studio staff! Right in our own backyard, the studio directors served up BBQ ribs and steak, beer, cigars and a special Tencent Boston cake. Staff were given the opportunity to take off the rest of the day, though many stuck around to play games! See more photos on Facebook.

In recognition of Take Our Daughters And Sons to Work Day 2012, Tencent Boston was thrilled to play host to a bright and enthusiastic group of employee kids for an afternoon of fun-filled learning and games. Younger participants enjoyed puzzles, coloring and video games in our office game room while older kids took our in-development game for a test drive and learned about game design and paper prototyping. The weather was lovely, our game looked great and we got a lot of positive feedback from parents whose kids participated. We're already looking forward to planning next year's event! Tencent Boston and Great Eastern Technology were proud to host the recent kick-off of their art competition and exhibit, "Beyond the Game: Artists Unchained." The art competition winners included regional game studio professional artists Matt Reinke, Eric Campanella and Phong Nguyen. The debut exhibit, comprised of nearly 30 pieces of pro and personal artwork from working game artists, will stay on display at the Accidental Gallery, located at 300 Summer Street in Boston, through Sunday, 4/22.

PAX East is right around the corner, and this year Tencent Boston is partnering with Great Eastern Technology to sponsor our upcoming invite-only PAX East networking party. In addition to showcasing the rich community of video game artists in the Boston area, we’re also excited to be giving away an Intuos5 tablet as a door prize to one lucky party guest, courtesy of Wacom! The IGDA annually grants scholarships for college students to attend key industry conferences. Selected by industry professionals, the IGDA Scholars comprise some of the world’s best and brightest up-and-coming developers. Tencent Boston is pleased to host the first-ever class of IGDA scholarship winners at PAX East, April 6-8. Tencent Boston is wrapping up the multi-day experience for the scholars with a day-long tour on April 9 at the Microsoft NERD Center, Harmonix, Zynga Boston and Tencent Boston. The IGDA Scholars will get a firsthand look at games in development at each studio and meet the developers who made them. Congrats to our PAX East scholars: Adam LeClair, Michael Lin, Sarah Schoemann, Adam Stark and Robert Yang.

Tencent Boston and Great Eastern Technology are sponsoring an art competition, invitation-only opening reception and 2-week art exhibit for Boston-area game artists. If you are a Boston-area game artist, here's your chance to be noticed during the upcoming PAX East weekend and beyond! We're asking game art professionals to submit their original artwork, either personal or professional, for our art exhibit.
Winning pieces will be featured at an art exhibit in the Accidental Gallery, near the Boston Convention and Exhibition Center, from April 7 to April 23. The opening night reception will be held during PAX East at the Channel Cafe, located at the gallery.
Event partner Great Eastern Technology, a provider of next-generation tools for artists, will be contributing finalist prizes for our art competition. This is a great opportunity for game artists to showcase their talent and skills in front of an appreciative community of industry peers and leaders! Acceptable media are paintings, digital art prints (matted or on backing), sculpture and video.

As part of the Inauguration Week for Becker College's 10th President Dr. Robert E. Johnson, a panel was held during the school's ribbon cutting of its new game development incubator to discuss how games are changing entertainment and education. IGDA Executive Director Gordon Bellamy acted as the panel's moderator which included various game industry leaders from MA including Tencent Boston GM Jeff Goodsill.

State Representative Vincent Pedone met with Tencent Boston to discuss his proposal to give video game companies a tax cut in MA. Pedone says the tax cut will give incentives to startups and already existing companies to stay in or relocate to MA. For more info click here.
